THE SHORT ANSWER

You become visible in AI search by doing five things in order.

  • Let the AI crawlers reach your pages.
  • Give them a page they can read without effort.
  • Put real numbers on it that a model can quote.
  • Keep those pages current.
  • Then get other websites saying the same thing about you.

There is no paid slot and no shortcut. Most brands see the first movement in three to six months.

Five years ago, visibility meant one thing. Rank on page one of Google. That is no longer enough. Your buyer now asks ChatGPT or Gemini for a shortlist. They read a Google AI Overview and never scroll. They open AI Mode and get a full answer with a handful of links attached. They ask Perplexity to compare two brands and take the reply at face value.

In every one of those cases, the brand named in the answer wins. Everyone else may as well not exist.

We have run this work on three very different sites: a B2B service brand, a high ticket store and a niche manufacturer.

Here is what moved the needle on each one.

Three Surfaces, One Job

AI search visibility means your brand gets named or quoted inside an AI answer. Not ranked below it. Named in it.

Three surfaces, one job: AI assistants, AI Overview and AI Mode

It splits across three surfaces, and each one needs slightly different work.

  1. AI assistants

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. A user asks a question in plain words. The tool writes one answer and names a few brands. You are in it or you are not.

  2. Google AI Overview

The AI box that now sits above the blue links on many searches. Google writes it from pages it already crawls and indexes, so your normal SEO work feeds it directly.

  3. Google AI Mode

The full conversational search tab. Google says it passed one billion monthly users within a year of launch, with queries more than doubling every quarter.

AI Mode behaves differently from AI Overview. It breaks your question into several searches behind the scenes and pulls sources for each one. So a page can be cited in AI Mode and missing from the AI Overview on the very same query.

Most brands treat all three as one thing, or ignore them and keep chasing rank positions. That is the gap we work in.

What the Click Data Says

This is worth knowing before you budget for it.

The click is shrinking: 15% click a result with no AI summary vs 8% with one, 1% click a link inside the summary

The Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults across nearly 69,000 Google searches. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a normal search result on 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked on 15%. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself. Sessions ended outright on 26% of pages with a summary, against 16% without.

Google has publicly questioned that methodology, so treat the figures as direction rather than gospel. The direction is not in much doubt, though. The click is shrinking, so the mention is the prize.

One number in that study points the way.

Pew found that 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources. Those slots are real; they are limited, and somebody fills them every day.

The other half of the story is what happens after the click you do get. Adobe Analytics studied more than a trillion visits to US retail sites and found AI-referred traffic grew 393% year over year in the first quarter, and converted 42% better than every other channel. A year earlier, the same traffic converted 38% worse. Fewer visitors, warmer visitors.

Campaign 1: Named First by All Four Assistants

Our client sells agency ad accounts to media buyers. Their buyers do their homework, so many of them now ask an AI tool for the best provider in the category.

Campaign 1: named first in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, with 1,639 AI sessions

We have worked on the site since launch, about two years. By the end of that period, all four major assistants named this client first for that question. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude.

The traffic followed. AI sessions hit 1,639 for the period, up 111% on the six months before. ChatGPT sent 936 of them, Gemini 342, Perplexity 189 and Claude 173. Those visits produced 91 contact conversions, up 98% on the same comparison.

That change in average position is the one to sit with. It moved the site off page three and onto page one, which is the pool Google draws most AI Overview sources from.

Both wins came from the same work. We did not run an SEO plan and an AI plan side by side. The full numbers are in our AI search optimization case study, and the approach is the core of our B2B SEO work.

Campaign 2: $29K From a Channel That Made Nothing in January

This one was a high-ticket jewelry store. In January, they had 117 AI visitors in a month and no revenue from AI at all.

Campaign 2: $29,174 from AI traffic, AI users growing from 117 in January to 1,399 in December

We started by asking the AI tools the questions their buyers ask, then traced where the answers came from. Most led to Reddit threads, buying guides on big publications and expert review sites. Almost none led to the brand’s own pages.

So we built content the tools could quote, and we placed the brand on the kinds of sites they read. That mix of on-site rewriting and off-site placement is the shape of most of our jewelry SEO retainers.

By December, the site pulled 1,399 AI users a month. The year totalled 8,381 new users from AI tools, 31 purchases, and $29,174 in revenue at an average order value of $941. ChatGPT accounted for more than nine in ten of those users.

Engagement rate on that traffic was 73%, well above what the same site gets from Google. That makes sense. A visitor sent by an AI tool has already been told the brand is worth a look. The month-by-month detail sits in our AI SEO case study.

Campaign 3: 9 AI Overview Spots With Zero Backlinks

The third campaign shows how much you can win from structure alone.

Campaign 3: 9 of 20 tracked keywords in Google AI Overview with zero backlinks

The client makes medical cold chain packaging. Their site had no real SEO base. No proper title tags. No schema at all. Thin internal linking. And no presence in Google AI Overview, in a niche where almost no rival had built a dedicated page.

We ran on-page work only. Thirteen pages, four buying segment pages and nine product pages. No new content, no link building, no rebuild.

Each page got one H1 and a new title tag with the focus keyword first. We added a self-referencing canonical, real alt text and internal links built by hand. Then we added FAQ blocks with FAQPage, Product and Service schema.

The result: 9 of 20 tracked keywords started showing up in Google AI Overview. Seven keywords sat at position 1. The term “blood bank shipper” went from outside the top 100 to number one. No backlinks were built at all. The whole scope is written up in our medical cold chain case study.

Be precise about what did the work here.

Google says structured data is not required for its AI features, so we do not hand the schema the credit. The lift came from pages that finally said what they were about, in a category where nobody else had bothered.

That is the point. In an under-served niche, a clean on-page SEO pass can buy you AI Overview spots on its own.

The Five Signals That Drive AI Visibility

Across all three campaigns, the same five things did the work. In this order.

Five signals in order: crawler access, readable structure, quotable content, fresh pages, off-site mentions
  1. Crawler access

Every AI tool uses its own crawlers. OpenAI runs GPTBot for model training and OAI-SearchBot for the index behind ChatGPT’s answers. Anthropic runs ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. Perplexity runs PerplexityBot. Block any of them in robots.txt, or hide your content behind JavaScript, and they cannot read you.

Google works differently, and people get this wrong constantly. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, not AI Overview and not AI Mode. Both of those run on normal Googlebot indexing and your snippet settings.

There is also a separate Search Console control for AI features that pulls a site out of AI Overview, AI Mode and Discover AI while leaving ordinary rankings alone. Check nobody on your team has quietly switched it on. We audit all of this first, and it is broken more often than you would think.

  2. Structure a machine can read

Clear headings. A short answer under each one. FAQ blocks, tables, and sentences that still make sense when lifted out of the page.

Be careful what you credit here. Google’s own AI optimization guide states that structured data is not required for its AI features, that there is no special markup to add, and that you do not need to chop content into tiny pieces.

Schema still earns rich results and keeps your data tidy, so we keep shipping it. It is just not the lever that gets you quoted. Clarity is, and campaign three is the proof.

  3. Content worth quoting

A page that says “we are a leading provider” gives a model nothing. A page with real numbers and a named source gives it a sentence it can repeat. We brief every SEO content writing job around that one rule: write for the quote, not just the keyword.

  4. Pages that stay current

This is the lever most teams forget. In our own tracking, the pages that hold their citations month after month are the ones we keep updating, not the ones we published and left alone. New figures, refreshed examples, a visible update date. Refreshing a page that already has authority usually beats publishing a new one.

  5. Off-site mentions that agree

AI tools read the live web and cross-check what they find. One claim on your own site is weak. The same claim on ten sites that do not know each other is strong.

Unlinked brand mentions do more work here than raw backlink counts. That is what digital PR is built for, and it is the step most SEO plans skip.

Why the Same Work Wins Twice

The pages that earn links are the same pages AI tools like to quote. Data pages, benchmarks, and buying guides. Anything with real figures and a clean layout.

On campaign one, our statistics pages did both jobs at once. The Facebook ads statistics page gained 675% more organic traffic across the six months, and the Google ads statistics page gained 3,850%. Those same pages became the ones the AI tools cite. One asset, two payoffs.

+675%

organic traffic, Facebook ads statistics page

+3,850%

organic traffic, Google ads statistics page

So you do not need a separate AI budget. You need to build the right kind of asset once, then get it mentioned in enough places that the tools trust it.

That second half is the slow part. Relevance beats domain rating here by a wide margin, so we place through niche guest posting rather than chasing DR alone. When speed matters, link insertions put a brand into articles that already rank, which cuts the wait for indexing.

Our AI Search Visibility Process

Here is the whole process in one table, in the order we run it.

Phase What we do Why it matters Timeline
1. Prompt audit Ask the AI tools your buyers’ real questions, then trace the sources behind each answer Tells you which sites to target, so you stop guessing Week 1 to 2
2. Crawler check Allow the AI crawlers, confirm Googlebot indexing and snippet settings, then fix rendering A page that cannot be read or indexed cannot be cited Week 1 to 2
3. On-page pass One H1, title tags, canonicals, alt text, internal links, FAQ blocks, schema This alone won 9 AI Overview spots on campaign three Month 1 to 2
4. Citable content Rewrite key pages around direct answers, real numbers and clean tables Models quote what they can lift without hedging Month 1 to 3
5. Data assets Build statistics pages, benchmarks and buying guides, then put them on a refresh cycle These earn links and citations at once, and stale pages lose both Month 2 to 6
6. Off-site mentions Niche guest posts, digital PR, resource pages, trade press Matching mentions on unrelated sites turn a hedge into a pick Month 2 on
7. Entity consistency Use one brand description on every profile, directory, and write-up Clashing descriptions are a top reason a tool will not name you Ongoing
8. Testing Track AI traffic in GA4, read the Search Console generative AI reports, run the same prompts monthly Referral data runs low, so prompt tests are the honest read Monthly

Three Things That Will Not Go the Way You Expect

  • Timelines depend on your category

Our jewelry client saw its first AI sale in month two and hit full speed in month eight. The B2B client took about two years, because its buyers are pickier and its rivals are sharper. Anyone quoting you 90 days for a hard category is describing a different job.

  • AI answers move, but less than they look

Ask the same question two ways and the wording and the brand order shift. The substance moves far less. We test in batches and report the pattern across a month, not a single position on a single day.

  • Your reports will understate the traffic

Many AI tools hide the referrer, so a large share of AI visits land in your reports as direct traffic. Treat the measured number as a floor, and treat your share of mentions as the real scoreboard.

Where to Start

If you have a small budget and want the fastest return, do it in this order.

  1. Start with the on-page pass

Start with the on-page pass. It is the cheapest step; it needs no outreach, and campaign three shows it can win AI Overview spots on its own. Run it alongside a technical SEO check so crawl and rendering problems surface early.

  2. Rewrite your most commercial pages

Then rewrite your three or four most commercial pages so a model can quote them. Real numbers, direct answers, FAQ blocks that match what is on the page.

  3. Place mentions at a steady pace

Then start placing mentions on relevant sites and keep a steady monthly pace. AI visibility rewards a slow drip far more than one big burst, which is why most of our clients run link building packages instead of buying 40 posts in a quarter and then stopping.

  4. Stay consistent for a year

Then keep saying the same thing about your brand for a year, and keep the pages that earn citations up to date while you do it.

FAQs

How long does it take to become visible in AI search?

Google AI Overview can move in weeks if the fix is structural. Our third campaign won 9 spots soon after deployment. AI assistants take longer, usually three to four months for a first citation in an easy category, and a year or more in a crowded one.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It overlaps more than most people expect. The pages that earn links are the pages models quote, so one content plan can serve both. The extra work is crawler access, structure, freshness, and getting your brand described the same way across other people’s sites.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. GEO stands for generative engine optimization. They are two names for one goal: getting your content used inside an AI answer. Google’s position is that both are still just SEO, and the work backs that up. The label matters less than the job.

What is the difference between Google AI Overview and AI Mode?

AI Overview is the summary box on a normal results page. AI Mode is a separate conversational tab that splits your question into several searches and answers from all of them. They pull from the same index but often land on different sources, so track them as two surfaces, not one.

Do backlinks still matter for AI search visibility?

Yes, though the reason has shifted. A link still passes authority and still helps you rank, which is what gets you into the AI Overview pool. For AI assistants, the mention itself does much of the work, because it teaches the model that your brand belongs in the category. A relevant mention with no link still counts for something.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

No. Google states plainly that you do not need to create AI text files or extra machine readable files, because Search does not use them. No major assistant reads llms.txt either. It does no harm, but it is not a ranking or citation lever, and it should never come before crawler access and content work.

Does my page have to rank on page one to get cited?

For Google AI Overview, mostly yes. Overview draws from pages Google already ranks well, which is why average position matters so much in campaign one. AI assistants are looser. They regularly cite pages that rank nowhere on Google, because they run their own retrieval on their own index.

Can you get into Google AI Overview without backlinks?

Yes, in a niche that is not crowded. Our third client won 9 AI Overview spots with zero links built, on structure and page level relevance alone. In a competitive niche you will still need authority behind the page.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overview?

No, and this trips up a lot of teams. Google-Extended governs whether your content is used to train and ground Gemini. AI Overview and AI Mode are Search features, so they draw on normal Googlebot indexing instead. If you want out of Google’s AI features, that is a separate Search Console setting.

How do I track AI search traffic in GA4?

Look for chatgpt.com, openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai in your referral report. Watch direct traffic spikes that line up with them, since many AI sessions carry no referrer.

Google also has a generative AI performance report in Search Console covering AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. Then run the same prompts by hand each month, since that is the only way to see visibility that never sends a click.
